Yoga in Barnham Broom

Barnham Broom is the heart of Blossom Yoga, the village where more classes run than anywhere else. Two venues share the work: The Painted Barn, a magnificent purpose-built yoga studio on Honingham Road, and Barnham Broom Village Hall on Norwich Road. Between them they host Hatha Yoga, Soulful Yoga & Social, Therapeutic Yoga, Meditation and the monthly Women’s Circle. The village is fifteen to twenty minutes west of Norwich via the A47, Watton Road, or through Colton. Parking is free at both venues and the atmosphere is warm and unhurried. For many students, the short drive out is part of what makes the class work: you arrive already beginning to slow down.

Barnham Broom is a small, quiet Norfolk village fifteen to twenty minutes west of Norwich, best known for its country hotel and golf club and for the river that winds gently through the surrounding farmland. It is the home of more Blossom Yoga classes than anywhere else, spread across two venues that suit quite different parts of the programme.

The Painted Barn (NR9 4DB) is on Honingham Road on the edge of the village. It is a truly magnificent space: a purpose-built yoga studio fully equipped with mats, blocks, bolsters and straps, with underfloor heating for all-year-round comfort. High rafters, big windows, warm wood and cows in the fields outside, with countryside seemingly for miles in every direction. There is a real gem of a cafe at the barn where students often gather after class. The Painted Barn is also where the monthly Women’s Circle is held in the evening and where the monthly Meditation Workshop runs on Saturday afternoons. It is one of the finest yoga settings in Norfolk.

Barnham Broom Village Hall (NR9 4BU) is on Norwich Road, a classic Norfolk country hall: well-kept, bright, with a generous wood floor, good heating. Hatha Yoga runs here on Monday evenings, Therapeutic Yoga on Friday mornings, and the short weekly Meditation class on Monday evenings just before Hatha Yoga.

The village is almost exclusively reached by car. From Norwich, take the A47 towards Dereham, the Watton Road, or come through Colton and Bawburgh. From the west, it is a short hop from Dereham or Wymondham. Both venues have free on-site parking. Students come from Barnham Broom, Kimberley, Colton, Marlingford, Honingham, Mattishall and the Norwich suburbs west of the river.

Classes here have the warmest, most continuous community of any of the venues. The practice at Barnham Broom has always been about more than the poses: students gather for ad hoc lunches, come together for Christmas events, and support one another through the harder and quieter stretches of life. True friendships have grown from the mat, which is exactly as it should be. The classes have only been running since 2023, which makes the depth of connection that has formed all the more remarkable. Newcomers are welcomed into that without fuss and tend to find their place within a class or two.

A local tip from Ania

The drive in from Norwich is prettiest on a spring evening via Bawburgh and Colton: take the slower route if you can. After Soulful Yoga & Social on a Tuesday morning, the cafe at The Painted Barn makes for a genuinely unhurried end to the morning before driving back.

Voices from Barnham Broom

"Soulful Yoga & Social at The Painted Barn is a wonderful morning. The barn itself is beautiful, the yoga is slow and nourishing, and the tea and cake afterwards give you a chance to sit and actually talk. I leave feeling calm, stretched and connected. Highly recommended."

FAQs

Questions about Barnham Broom

Which venue do I come to, The Painted Barn or the Village Hall?

It depends on the class. Soulful Yoga & Social, the monthly Women’s Circle and the monthly Meditation Workshop are held at The Painted Barn (NR9 4DB) on Honingham Road. Hatha Yoga, Therapeutic Yoga and the weekly Monday Meditation class are held at Barnham Broom Village Hall (NR9 4BU) on Norwich Road. Both are in the village, about five minutes apart.

How long is the drive from Norwich?

Typically 15 to 20 minutes. From Norwich, take the A47, the Watton Road, or come through Colton and Bawburgh. A little longer at school pick-up time, but almost entirely country road.

Is there parking?

Yes, free parking at both venues. The Painted Barn has a large gravel courtyard that never fills up; the Village Hall has space for around 20 cars directly outside.

I live in a surrounding village: do people drive in from Mattishall, Kimberley, Wymondham?

Yes, regularly. Students come from across NR9, NR8, NR20 and the Norwich suburbs. The small, stable community is a big part of what makes it worth the drive.

Is the venue warm in winter?

Yes, both venues heat well and the heating is on before students arrive. The Painted Barn has underfloor heating throughout, making it particularly comfortable year-round. Blankets are not provided, so bring one if you tend to feel the cold during the long rest at the end.
