Meditation in Barnham Broom

At: The Painted Barn & Barnham Broom Village Hall
When: Weekly class: Mondays 5:00pm–5:25pm at the Village Hall (just before the 5:30pm Hatha Yoga) · Monthly workshop: Saturdays 1:30pm at The Painted Barn

Meditation at Barnham Broom runs in two formats, both led by James, and both open to complete beginners and long-term meditators alike.

The weekly Monday class at Barnham Broom Village Hall is short and practice-led: 25 minutes at 5pm. It is slotted in deliberately just before the 5:30pm Hatha Yoga class so you can roll straight from one into the other for a full evening of practice, or take just the meditation and head home. Sit on a cushion or a chair, whichever keeps your spine comfortably upright. Candles, the heating on, a quiet warm room. You sit, you are briefly oriented and the technique is explained for newcomers and as a recap, and then you practise. There is time for a short question or comment at the end.

The monthly Meditation Workshop at The Painted Barn (Saturdays, 1:30pm) takes a different approach: an hour given over to unpacking a single technique properly. The why behind it, the posture and breath that support it, the common pitfalls. You then practise it together. Afterwards there is plenty of time to discuss as a group or in private, and the session closes over tea in the cafe, bringing the stillness into daily life, in community.

The two formats work as a pair: the workshop teaches, the weekly class is where you put the work in. Either suits beginners or long-term meditators; many students come to both. The traditions drawn on across both are classical yogic: breath awareness, japa, mantra, trataka, inner-body attention. All taught practically, with just a touch of mysticism and a generous dose of inspiration.

Your first visit

  • 1 Arrive 15 minutes before the start; the room will be set and settling in before you begin matters.
  • 2 Sit however you can keep an erect spine: cushions on the floor or an upright chair both work. That’s the only posture rule that really matters.
  • 3 No experience needed and no “right way” to feel. If you fall asleep, it just means you lost concentration; it has happened to all of us.
  • 4 You can ask questions at the end; you don’t have to.
The venue

The Painted Barn & Barnham Broom Village Hall

Address

The Painted Barn, Honingham Road, Barnham Broom, Norwich (NR9 4DB) · Village Hall, Norwich Road, Barnham Broom (NR9 4BU)

Parking

Free parking on site at both venues. The Painted Barn has a generous gravel courtyard; the Village Hall has space for around 20 cars directly outside.

Accessibility

The Painted Barn has level access to the main practice space and toilet. The Village Hall is single-storey with level access and accessible toilet. Both venues are warm, well-lit and welcoming.

A local tip

If you can, do the meditation and stay on for the 5:30pm Hatha Yoga: the meditation lands the body into the practice that follows in a way that’s hard to manufacture. If you’re only doing the meditation, the drive home through the country lanes carries the settled state with you remarkably well. After a weekend workshop at The Painted Barn, the same applies but with the bonus of afternoon light.

About Meditation

What the practice involves

Meditation at Blossom Yoga is taught the way a skill is taught: practically, patiently, and with clear instruction. There are two complementary offerings: a weekly 25-minute practice-led class on Mondays at 5pm at Barnham Broom Village Hall (slotted in before the 5:30pm Hatha Yoga class so it’s easy to pair the two), and a monthly hour-long Meditation Workshop at The Painted Barn, where a single technique is unpacked properly before you practise it together. Both are led by James, draw on traditional yogic techniques, and suit complete beginners as readily as long-term meditators.

Students typically find it helps with

  • Reduces baseline anxiety and reactivity
  • Improves sleep, particularly sleep latency and early waking
  • Builds focus, clarity and a calmer relationship with thought
  • Eases physical tension through deep nervous-system rest
  • Supports grief, major life transitions and emotional overwhelm
  • Creates a portable practice you can take into the rest of your life
FAQs

Meditation at Barnham Broom

Is this religious?

No. The techniques come from yogic tradition, but no belief is required. James teaches meditation as a skill.

Will it work for me if my mind is very busy?

Yes: a busy mind is the starting condition for nearly everyone. You don’t need a quiet mind to begin; you need a willingness to notice. That’s the practice.

Should I come to the weekly class, the monthly workshop, or both?

Both, ideally: they’re designed to feed each other. The workshop gives you proper teaching on a technique; the weekly class is where you actually practise it, week after week. But either one works on its own if that’s what your week allows.

How often should I come?

Weekly attendance builds a real practice within a couple of months. Fortnightly still works. You’ll get more out of it if you do even five minutes of practice at home on the days in between; James will give you a simple way to start.
